《中國青銅器》記載：“幾何紋大致有連珠紋弦紋……百乳雷紋……菱形雷紋、網(wǎng)紋等”，其中提到“百乳雷紋”，并未指出幾何紋飾包括乳釘紋。其實(shí)，百乳雷紋應(yīng)該是乳釘紋的一種。高蒙河在《銅器與中國文化》中說：“乳釘紋突起的乳突，排列成單行或方陣式。多見于商代晚期和西周時(shí)代。”

此乳釘紋形狀簡單、明快，如果就單個(gè)乳釘?shù)男螤羁矗煌臅r(shí)代是分不出多少區(qū)別的。但乳突群與其它幾何紋飾的組合并形成固定的圖案，它們在不同的時(shí)代各領(lǐng)風(fēng)騷，我們便可據(jù)此來分類斷代了。
