圓明園十二生肖獸首銅像原為圓明園海晏堂外的噴泉的一部分，是清乾隆年間的紅銅鑄像。1860年英法聯(lián)軍侵略中國，火燒圓明園，獸首銅像開始流失海外。
The bronze statue of animal heads of the twelve Zodiacs in Yuanmingyuan was originally a part of the fountain outside Haiyan Hall in Yuanmingyuan, and it was a red bronze statue cast during the reign of Qianlong in Qing Dynasty. In 1860, the Anglo-French allied forces invaded China, burning the Yuanmingyuan, and the bronze statues of animal heads began to be lost overseas.
到2012年為止牛首、猴首、虎首、豬首、和馬首銅像已回歸中國，收藏在保利藝術(shù)博物館；2013年4月26日，法國皮諾家族在北京宣布將向中方無償捐贈流失海外的圓明園十二大水法中的青銅鼠首和兔首。此次捐贈的鼠首、兔首，為北京圓明園流失的十二生肖青銅像中的兩件。 [1] 目前，圓明園十二大水法中的十二大生肖獸首已經(jīng)有8個回歸中國，其中龍首目前在臺灣保存完好，不過蛇首、雞首、狗首、羊首則下落不明。
