"咸豐"是清文宗的年號(hào)，咸豐年間正值太平天國(guó)革命運(yùn)動(dòng)的高潮時(shí)期，當(dāng)時(shí)國(guó)家財(cái)政入不敷出，民怨沸騰。為了籌措龐大的軍費(fèi)開(kāi)支，咸豐三年(公元1853年)清政府被迫開(kāi)鑄大錢(qián)，相繼推出"咸豐重寶"、"咸豐元寶"。為了迅速推行大錢(qián)，清政府在原有寶源、寶泉和各省錢(qián)局外，又設(shè)立熱河寶德局、江蘇寶蘇局、新疆喀什局等地方鑄錢(qián)局，其種類(lèi)冗多，版別繁雜，創(chuàng)有清一代鑄錢(qián)之最。
寶浙局自順治六年杭州府局開(kāi)設(shè)以來(lái)，至咸豐年間發(fā)生太平天國(guó)起義，當(dāng)時(shí)江南地區(qū)是清軍與太平軍的主要戰(zhàn)場(chǎng)，浙江大部分被太平軍占領(lǐng)，連省城杭州也被太平軍攻占，全省唯衢州完獨(dú)。為解決軍費(fèi)問(wèn)題，清政府咸豐五年從杭州遷局于衢州，二月開(kāi)始鑄咸豐大錢(qián)，有當(dāng)十、二十、三十、四十、五十、當(dāng)百及小平錢(qián)，以記所鑄省名也，以資軍用。
由于咸豐當(dāng)十錢(qián)屬于大型古錢(qián)幣，而且具有多局，多版，多字體，多紋記多材質(zhì)等奇異特點(diǎn)，此枚錢(qián)幣字跡清晰深俊，銅材優(yōu)良，呈淺紫黃色，錢(qián)文精美，沒(méi)一絲一毫拖泥帶水，正面鑄“咸豐重寶”楷體；背面書(shū)漢文“十”字在最上。錢(qián)文高挺，字口峻深，地章平潔，字的筆劃之間沒(méi)有絲毫粘連。滿文“咸豐重寶”四字，筆劃走勢(shì)勻當(dāng)，布局凝重，字根穿口特深，并有明顯的雕痕，穿廓有一定的拔模度，四角有決意，背“十”相配，較為協(xié)調(diào)。具有較高的文化歷史意義與收藏價(jià)值。
