The cloth coin is an ancient Chinese currency. It is also called spade because of its shape. In the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period, the spade-shaped copper coins circulated in the Central Plains. The shovel tool was once the medium of folk trade, so the earliest coins were made into shovels.
Cloth is the meaning of linen, linen is also one of the trading media. After the appearance of copper coins, people still call copper coins cloth because of the influence of long-term habits. But some predecessors also thought that cloth is the homophone of Qian Di. The coins are separated into blank and peaceful ones. In the Southern Song Dynasty, Hong Zun's Quanzhi had recorded the plain head cloth, and it was from the Qing Dynasty that the empty head cloth was defined as coin. From the time of Jiaqing and Daoguang, some ancient money scholars have pointed out that the place names on the coins belonged to the period of Zhou Dynasty, thus denying the misconception that some people thought they were relics of the period of Three Emperors and Five Emperors.
Bu coin, which appeared in the early Spring and Autumn Period, was a shovel currency that was minted and circulated in the late Warring States Period. "Bu" is a homophonic borrowing word of "Ba", which is commonly used in ancient times. Cloth coins evolved from bronze farm tools and were mainly used in Sanjin and two-week areas. According to the shape of cloth, it can be divided into two categories: empty cloth and flat cloth.
The original cloth, retaining its shape as a tool, with a handle of the primitive and thick, so called empty cloth; later gradually reduced, thinned, smaller, the body of the coin completely into a sheet, known as flat cloth. Plain head cloth is usually cast with place names or chronological characters. Later, Wang Mang's new dynasty also made coins. Thus we can see the collection value and historical value of the three-hole cloth coin.
