太平通寶北宋太宗太平興國年間（公元976～984年）鑄行，宋代第一種年號，隸書、篆書對形制，從幣形制、文風格、鑄工藝以及幣的共通時代氣息判斷，篆書太平通寶，可以斷定是宋太宗太平興國年間鑄行。與太平通寶隸書幣，形成宋代的第一種對。只是因為太平興國時期，為太宗的第一個年號，時間不足八年，其時太宗剛剛登基，政、戰事忙亂，內穩帝位，安撫人心，外迫古玩納土，平北漢、征遼國，試圖統一交趾（今越南），執行守內虛外的政策。因此，鑄行的太平通寶幣，隸書幣推行開來，得以流通全國；篆書幣試鑄后，因為時機不成熟或某種意外變故，卻未能鑄行天下。
