日本是最早開始仿鑄中國方孔圓錢的國家。據(jù)一些專家研究，日本在公元708年奈良朝元明天皇和同元年(公元708年，相當(dāng)于我國唐中宗景龍二年)開始仿效中國唐朝鑄幣，鑄行"和同開稱"方孔圓錢。到19世紀(jì)60年代，共鑄行方孔圓錢32種，其中的"寬永通寶"是鑄行量最大的一種。
