上海一兩銀幣，系1867年由上海工部局委托香港造幣廠所鑄。正面主圖是龍紋、四周環(huán)書“上海一兩”漢字，背面主要為英國皇冠和國徽、四周環(huán)繞英文“上海一兩”、鑄地“香港”、銀幣成色與鑄造年份。這種銀幣的正面分有芒紋和無芒紋兩種，并有光邊和齒邊的區(qū)別，存世以枚為計。
Shanghai one or two silver COINS, was commissioned by the Shanghai ministry of industry in 1867 by the Hong Kong mint. The main picture on the front is dragon pattern, surrounded by the Chinese character "Shanghai one or two", and on the back is the British crown and national emblem, surrounded by the English word "Shanghai one or two", the place of casting "Hong Kong", the fineness and age of the silver coin. This kind of silver coin has two kinds of awn grain and no awn grain on the front, and has the difference between the bright edge and the tooth edge.
錢幣界最早對“上海壹兩”進行考證而有具體結(jié)果的是中國機制銅幣大師伍德華（Tracey Woodward）。他在1922年開始注意此幣，至1937年發(fā)表研究心得，期間費時近十五年。其結(jié)論是“上海壹兩”（Shanghai One Tael）是誤寫，應(yīng)該是“壹上海兩”（One Shanghai Tael），“上海”一詞是指秤量單位，不是地名，即其本意是“漕平壹兩”，并非只要在上海行用。
