清咸豐年間(1851-1861年)，太平天國(guó)農(nóng)民起義開(kāi)展迅猛，并在江蘇南京建都，此刻清政府賴以鑄錢之用的滇銅，因路途阻斷而無(wú)法運(yùn)進(jìn)北京。一方面是打壓起義急需許多的軍餉開(kāi)支，一方面是鑄錢的原材料告缺，給清政府造成了嚴(yán)峻的財(cái)務(wù)困難，最終迫使清政府自咸豐三年開(kāi)端發(fā)行紙幣和改鑄大錢來(lái)補(bǔ)償財(cái)務(wù)虧空。咸豐朝寶泉局所鑄錢有“當(dāng)百”、“當(dāng)二百”、“當(dāng)三百”、“當(dāng)五百”、“當(dāng)千”等五種面值。
