1911年12月29日，經辛亥革命后，孫 中 山被推選為臨時大總統。1912年1月3日，中華民國政府宣告成立，清朝滅亡，在中國持續2000多年的封建君主專制隨之結束。1912年袁世凱竊取臨時大總統，復辟稱帝，下令于 1916 年元旦起，廢除民國年號，改為中華帝國洪憲元年，并由天津造幣廠鑄造中華帝國洪憲紀元銀幣。該幣由國外雕刻師喬治氏主持銅板雕刻，鑄造精美，為中國近代鑄幣史上之精 品。
