大明宣德爐，可以說是中國香爐史上最具有代表性的爐器之一，如果說宋式爐器是由用到賞的初始，那宣爐則是賞之極致。宣爐的形成，有著偶然，也有必然。偶然者，在于材質(zhì)，風(fēng)磨銅當(dāng)時(shí)非我朝所有之物；必然者，帝王好雅，冶銅工藝成熟，香爐使用普及等。如非幾重因緣聚合，也難有宣爐之顯。

器說物之所成，必有其用；人之好物，始有形制，提到香爐，其材質(zhì)不出陶、銅、鐵、瓷，少有佛道供養(yǎng)者制金銀之器以敬殿前，當(dāng)前也有以琉璃制爐者，如是種種，材質(zhì)不盡相同，但其所取之形幾近相似。戰(zhàn)漢時(shí)期多以陶、銅制爐，或用于禮祭，或用于生活。但論香爐之名，當(dāng)以博山爐而為始，博山爐的出現(xiàn)也是將器物造形，體現(xiàn)出了人們的祈愿心理和藝術(shù)美感的融通。

宣德皇帝在位時(shí)，傳說宮內(nèi)的佛殿失火，金銀、銅像都混成液體。又傳說是佛典起火，金銀珠寶與銅都燒結(jié)在一起，于是宣德皇帝命令將其鑄成銅爐。宣德皇帝詢問鑄工說，銅煉幾次才能精純？鑄工回答說用六火煉銅，就會(huì)現(xiàn)出珠寶的光彩。于是宣德皇帝命令煉十二火，把銅做成條。再用赤火熔化銅條，置于鋼鐵制成的篩格上，把先滴下的最精純的選取出來制成爐，把仍存于篩格上的取出來制成其他的器物。
When Emperor Xuande was in power, it was said that the Buddha Hall in the palace was on fire, and gold, silver and bronze statues were mixed into liquid. It is also said that Buddha's code set fire, gold, silver, jewelry and copper were all sintered together, so emperor Xuande ordered them to be cast into copper furnaces. Emperor Xuande asked the foundry, how many times can copper be refined? The forger replied that if six heats of copper were used, the jewels would shine. So emperor Xuande ordered twelve fires to be smelted and copper made into strips. Then melt the copper bar with red fire, put it on the screen made of iron and steel, select the purest one to be made into a furnace, and take the one still on the screen to be made into other utensils.
宣德爐在宣德中期模仿宋代的燒斑，掩蓋了爐的本質(zhì)，就用一種外國產(chǎn)的鹵液浸潤、擦拭、薰洗，把色彩變?yōu)橄灢琛５搅诵履┢冢瑒t更加顯示它自然色澤，著色更淡。后人評(píng)論說，宣德爐有五等色：栗殼、茄皮、棠梨、褐色，而以佛經(jīng)紙的色澤為第一。鎏金的爐腹下鑄成祥云涌起的樣子，鎏金的爐口下部為祥云翻覆的樣子。至于雞皮色，則是著火氣長了才出現(xiàn)的。
