清王朝建立至鴉片戰(zhàn)爭(zhēng)發(fā)生的近兩百年中，清政府實(shí)行的是銀兩與銅鑄錢并行的歷史貨幣制度。清初中國對(duì)外貿(mào)易呈出超狀態(tài)，白銀內(nèi)流，特別是隨著鴉片大量輸入和國際貿(mào)易擴(kuò)大，造成巨額白銀外流，使原己出現(xiàn)的銀貴錢賤問題日趨嚴(yán)重，銀錢并行制度的弊端曰益嚴(yán)重和突出起來。時(shí)值外國機(jī)制銀元泛濫為患，鑒于此時(shí)清末張之洞出任兩廣總督，至光緒十五年（1889年）改調(diào)湖廣，先后在粵六年引進(jìn)外國設(shè)備，創(chuàng)設(shè)槍炮廠，礦務(wù)局，廣東錢局等。其所創(chuàng)設(shè)的廣東錢局，對(duì)晚清幣制改革產(chǎn)生了巨大影響，促使清末鑄幣在全國范圍內(nèi)發(fā)生了一次技術(shù)革命。

The establishment of Guangdong money bureau had a great influence on the currency system reform in the late Qing Dynasty, which led to a technical revolution in the late Qing Dynasty.
光緒三十二年（1906年），清政府在天津成立戶部造幣總廠，鑄造“光緒元寶”銀元和“大清銀幣”。光緒三十一年（1905年），云南獲得批準(zhǔn)設(shè)立分廠，廠址于舊寶云局地址上，現(xiàn)今昆明市錢局街，機(jī)器設(shè)備由德國進(jìn)口，技術(shù)工人從四川調(diào)入，祖模系向天津廠請(qǐng)領(lǐng)，于光緒三十三年（1907年）建成銀元局后又改名云南造幣廠，生產(chǎn)“光緒元寶”新舊兩類版別的銀幣。老版成色較佳，市場(chǎng)流通信用較好，俗稱“老云南”。面值有七錢二分（一元）、三錢六分（五角）、一錢四分四厘（二角）；新版成色相對(duì)較差，后來在流通中逐漸折中使用，面值有七錢二分（一元）、三錢六分（五角）、一錢四分四厘（二角）、七分二厘（一角）四個(gè)品種，俗稱“新云南”。

The face value of the new edition is divided into four varieties, namely, seven two cents (one yuan), three six cents (five cents), one quarter four cents (two cents) and seven two cents (one jiao), commonly known as "new Yunnan".
