隕石也分為石隕石、鐵隕石和石鐵隕石。在宇宙中，除了火星、金星這些我們熟知的行星，還有一些星際物質也會圍繞著太陽旋轉，這些星際物質進入地球的大氣層后，就成為了我們口中的流星，而它實際上則叫做“流星體”。流星體通過與大氣分子的摩擦碰撞，沿途會留下空氣電離的余跡，墜落到地表就成為了隕石。其中，火山巖成分較高的為石隕石，鐵密度較大的為鐵隕石，而石鐵隕石則含有50%的硅酸鹽和50%的鎳鐵合金。
