歷史上，辛亥革命爆發(fā)后，北洋新軍創(chuàng)始人袁世凱竊取了革命果實(shí)，成為中華人民共和國(guó)的總統(tǒng)，隨后又進(jìn)行復(fù)辟帝制的活動(dòng)。在其就位期間，為了加強(qiáng)自己的統(tǒng)治地位，穩(wěn)定國(guó)內(nèi)時(shí)局，同時(shí)發(fā)展民族經(jīng)濟(jì)，便開(kāi)始將全國(guó)的貨幣進(jìn)行了一番統(tǒng)一的改造，變革成今天我們所提到的袁大頭銀幣。然而，袁世凱僅僅稱(chēng)帝83天就被迫宣告退位，在這種情況下，袁大頭貨幣也因發(fā)行量少，使用時(shí)間短而成為中國(guó)歷史上存世量非常稀少的珍貴錢(qián)幣。

錢(qián)幣的正面鑄有袁世凱的側(cè)身頭像，頂部刻制著“中華民國(guó)十年造”幾個(gè)清晰而又顯眼的楷體字體，足以說(shuō)明錢(qián)幣產(chǎn)生的年代以及當(dāng)時(shí)國(guó)家的統(tǒng)治階層。反面的圖案則是一對(duì)對(duì)稱(chēng)的彎曲麥芒，中間刻有“壹圓”兩個(gè)字作為計(jì)量單位。幣面整體設(shè)計(jì)和諧，圖案精美，工藝技術(shù)特別精益求精。
