“袁大頭”，是對鑄造于民國初年鐫有袁世凱側(cè)面頭像壹圓銀幣的一種俗稱。因其首鑄于民國三年，又有稱“民三”者，此類別稱由來已久。作為民國軍閥銀幣的領(lǐng)頭羊，“袁大頭”銀元的誕生，也是銀元發(fā)展的必然結(jié)果。在辛亥革命后，袁世凱為了解決軍費(fèi)和提高個(gè)人政治地位而發(fā)行的銀元貨幣，因這些銀元鑄有他的側(cè)身圖像而得名。
