為"印石三寶"之一的田黃石，呈現(xiàn)黃、白、紅、黑等色，其中以黃色為最常見。具有珍珠光澤、玻璃光澤、油脂光澤，微透明至半透明，少數(shù)透明。硬度2.5，密度2.65-2.90克/厘米3。質(zhì)地致密、細(xì)膩、溫潤、光潔。尤為引人注目的是其肌里隱約可見蘿卜紋狀細(xì)紋，顏色外濃而向內(nèi)逐漸變淡，表面時(shí)而裹有黃色或灰黑色石皮，間有紅色格紋。為田黃石所獨(dú)有的外觀特征，素有"無紋不成田"、"無皮不成田"、"無格不成田"之稱。誠然，從其石質(zhì)來說，仍以純凈為貴。

田黃石大多為卵狀，故用手撫摸時(shí)會(huì)有圓順溫潤之感，一塊好的田黃石還須經(jīng)藝術(shù)加工，加工的手法有薄意、浮雕、圓雕和制成方章。田黃石日漸稀少價(jià)格扶搖直上，易金三倍之說早已過時(shí)。拍賣市場(chǎng)上田黃石價(jià)格火爆，一方幾十克重的田黃舊印動(dòng)輒幾萬、十幾萬元，件頭稍大的上品，可以賣到幾十萬、上百萬元。田黃，這一數(shù)百年來一直受文人雅士所喜好的收藏"舊寵"，除了田黃本身蘊(yùn)含了高雅、品位等文化內(nèi)涵外，還因?yàn)樘稂S石材稀缺。田黃屬傳統(tǒng)雕刻石材壽山石中的上品，出產(chǎn)于福建壽山鄉(xiāng)一條名為壽山溪的西邊古沙層中，已有數(shù)百年的開采歷史。由于多年的開采，田黃石材已趨枯竭，石材價(jià)格猛漲。以前說"一兩黃金一兩田黃"，一兩田黃的價(jià)格早已比一兩黃金高出好幾倍。據(jù)廣州市文物總店的專家介紹，1克品相普通的田黃石材要價(jià)已達(dá)3000元。
