雞肝瑪瑙是石英的變種，是由二氧化硅沉積而成的隱晶質(zhì)石英的一種。從切開(kāi)的剖面就可以看到由灰、白、紅、綠、淡褐、淡藍(lán)等多種不同顏色組成的同心圓狀、波紋狀、層狀或者是平行條帶狀，俗話有千種雞肝瑪瑙萬(wàn)種玉的說(shuō)法，寶石界將其中具有同心層狀和不規(guī)則紋帶、纏絲構(gòu)造的隱晶質(zhì)塊體石英稱(chēng)為雞肝瑪瑙。
