作品采用散點(diǎn)透視構(gòu)圖法,生動(dòng)記錄了中國(guó)十二世紀(jì)北宋都城汴京(又稱東京,今河南開封)的城市面貌和當(dāng)時(shí)社會(huì)各階層人民的生活狀況,是北宋全盛時(shí)期都城汴京繁榮的見證。

《清明上河圖》在表現(xiàn)手法上,以不斷移動(dòng)視點(diǎn)的辦法,即“散點(diǎn)透視法”來攝取所需的景象。大到廣闊的原野、浩瀚的河流、高聳的城郭,細(xì)到舟車上的釘鉚、攤販上的小商品、市招上的文字,和諧的組織成統(tǒng)一整體,在畫中有仕、農(nóng)、商、醫(yī)、卜、僧、道、胥吏、婦女、兒童、篙師、纜夫等人物及驢、牛、駱駝等牲畜。有趕集、買賣、閑逛、飲酒、聚談、推舟、拉車、乘轎、騎馬等情節(jié)。畫中大街小巷,店鋪林立,酒店、茶館、點(diǎn)心鋪等百肆雜陳,還有城樓、河港、橋梁、貨船,官府宅第和茅棚村舍密集。

關(guān)于《清明上河圖》中畫有的人數(shù),說法不一,常見的有500余人說(白壽彝《中國(guó)通史》)、815人說(湯友常數(shù)米法)、1695人說(齊藤謙《拙堂文話·卷八》),此外各種牲畜六十多匹,木船二十多只,房屋樓閣三十多棟,推車乘轎也有二十多件,各種說法較為一致。如此豐富多彩的內(nèi)容,為歷代古畫中所罕見。各色人物從事的各種活動(dòng),不僅衣著不同,神情氣質(zhì)也各異而且穿插安排著各種活動(dòng),其間充滿著戲劇性的情節(jié)沖突,令觀者看罷,饒有無窮回味。
