作品采用散點(diǎn)透視構(gòu)圖法，生動(dòng)記錄了中國(guó)十二世紀(jì)北宋都城汴京（又稱東京，今河南開封）的城市面貌和當(dāng)時(shí)社會(huì)各階層人民的生活狀況，是北宋全盛時(shí)期都城汴京繁榮的見證。

《清明上河圖》在表現(xiàn)手法上，以不斷移動(dòng)視點(diǎn)的辦法，即“散點(diǎn)透視法”來攝取所需的景象。大到廣闊的原野、浩瀚的河流、高聳的城郭，細(xì)到舟車上的釘鉚、攤販上的小商品、市招上的文字，和諧的組織成統(tǒng)一整體，在畫中有仕、農(nóng)、商、醫(yī)、卜、僧、道、胥吏、婦女、兒童、篙師、纜夫等人物及驢、牛、駱駝等牲畜。有趕集、買賣、閑逛、飲酒、聚談、推舟、拉車、乘轎、騎馬等情節(jié)。畫中大街小巷，店鋪林立，酒店、茶館、點(diǎn)心鋪等百肆雜陳，還有城樓、河港、橋梁、貨船，官府宅第和茅棚村舍密集。
